What Are Antioxidants?
Antioxidants are molecules produced in the body such as Glutathione (The Master Antioxidant), and others are found in foods such as A, C, E, and flavonoids (phytochemicals).
These molecules protect against unstable molecules in the body and are known as free radicals. Like everything in life, there must be a balance between the two. When there are not enough antioxidants to combat free radicals, this leads to oxidative stress, causing damage to cells, proteins, DNA, and will expedite the aging process. Topically, antioxidants do the same for your skin, protecting against cellular damage and assisting in a brighter, more even complexion, as well as combating fine lines and wrinkles.
Causes of oxidative stress are environmental, toxins, chemo, radiation, stress, trauma, infections, drugs, alcohol, too much exercise, etc. Remember that too much of a good thing can also have consequences within the body.
To combat oxidative stress, eat a wide variety of brightly-colored plant foods on the daily, and feed your skin with an array of antioxidants and hydration. Get your beauty sleep, and include yoga, meditation, and deep breathing into your weekly routine.
